Think about pronunciation

Have a special page in your notebooks for words that are difficult to pronounce.

Think:
  • what is/are the vowel sound/s?

  • what is the consonant sound?

  • how many syllables are there?

  • where is the stress?

Use the sound bank at the end of the book to help you.

Check in your dictionaries.

Listen to the pronunciation to the "speaking dicitonary" in the blog.

The first vowel sound in "favourite" is like (como) the vowel sound in "train" (not like "cat").

Look at the following sounds in black. Then decide which of the two words has a similar sound.

  • public - like up or bull?
  • July - like tree or bike?
  • April - like cat or train?
  • busy - like boot or fish?
  • busy - like snake or zebra?
  • secret - like egg or tree?
  • worried - like clock or up?
  • twice - like bike or tree?

Check the phonemic spelling of the following words in your dictionaries.

  • once
  • twice
  • always
  • exercise
  • island
  • stressed
  • dressed
  • breakfast
  • advice
  • city
  • hungry
  • angry
  • tired

Try to group words with similar sounds together.

Pronunciation isn't easy but you can improve it with practice!
